Whenever I come across the same idea two or three times within a couple of days, I figure it’s something to pay attention to.

Especially if it’s from Scripture.

This week, the idea that healing can come through unexpected means came up twice on the same day. So I thought I’d pay close attention, and share it with you.

The first time was through a devotional app I really enjoy. It’s called Lectio 365, and each day there is a morning and evening audio (and printed words), using the simple outline of P-R-A-Y: Pause, Rejoice & Reflect, Ask, and Yield.

The Scripture selection for reflection on July 26 was from John 5:5-9a, about the man who spent years by the pool of Bethesda, waiting for a miracle. Jesus sees him, knows that he has been sick for a long time, and asks him a pointed question: “Do you want to be healed?”

The man explains why he can’t be healed: “I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going, another steps down before me.” His chance at being healed was slim to none—or so he thought.

The devotional points out that at this point, the sick man knew only one way to be healed: to get into the pool first when the water is stirred up. “But Jesus expands his limited imagination with an invitation to action; ‘Get up, pick up your bed, and start walking.’”

And the man did!

That very same day, I was reading through my two-year Bible reading plan, and came to the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5, who had some kind of serious skin disease. He was general of the army under the king of Aram, and very valuable to the king. A girl from Israel who had been captured and ended up being the servant of Naaman’s wife told her that there was a prophet in Israel who could tell Naaman how to be healed.

Naaman first went to the king of Israel for help, but that king recognized his grave limitations in being able to heal, and referred Naaman to Elisha the prophet.

Naaman came to Elisha, all decked out with gifts. Elisha didn’t even bother to meet him in person; he sent his servant with a message to Naaman: “Go to the River Jordan and immerse yourself seven times. Your skin will be healed and you’ll be as good as new.”

This totally offended Naaman. He lost his temper, and fumed, “I thought he’d personally come out and meet me, call on the name of the LORD, wave his hand over the diseased spot, and get rid of the disease. Aren’t the Damascus rivers cleaner by far than the rivers in Israel? Why not bathe there; at least I’ll get clean.” He stomped off in a rage.

[Here’s another example of someone believing he could only be healed in a certain way. In this case, he vociferously resisted the new (and simpler) approach given by Elisha.]

Naaman’s servants tried to change his mind. “If the prophet had asked you to do something hard and heroic, wouldn’t you have done it? So why not this simple ‘wash and be clean’?”

Naaman gave in, followed Elisha’s orders—and was completely healed. AND he was convinced that the only true God was Elisha’s God, the LORD.

These stories remind me of the people I’ve tried to share The Healing Codes with. They are resistant to such a strange way of healing. If you don’t understand that everything is energy, and that if you shift the energy from negative to positive, things can change, things can be healed—you won’t be open to The Healing Codes.

Or a number of other healing modalities, for that matter. I don’t believe The Healing Codes are God’s only tool in his toolbox. He can use any tool he wants.

The question, for all of us, is: Are we open to God using a tool that we’ve never heard of, or don’t understand?

Can we, like the man at the pool of Bethesda, or like Naaman, take the step of faith and follow what God may be showing us to do—even if we don’t understand it or if it seems too “simple”?

What “miracle” might be possible if we did step out in faith?

Are You Too Nice for Your Own Good?

I always thought it was a good thing to be a nice person, and strove to be a nice person myself.

Until I read this article by Jason Henry.

Henry says that people who are are “nice” (as opposed to “good”) are people who don’t want to hurt others because they were so hurt and traumatized in the past and didn’t heal, that they make a vow (perhaps unconscious) to never make others feel the way they felt.

Perhaps those who possess the trait of high sensitivity are even more susceptible to this. I’ve often thought that HSPs were the nicest people in the world. Because we feel so deeply and take in so much, including our own suffering and that of others, we often bend over backwards to make sure we don’t cause suffering to other people.

Sounds noble, right? Even, perhaps, “Christian.” Do not do unto others as they have done unto you.

What Kind of Healing Can You Expect?

I was talking with a new client about what to expect with The Healing Codes. We can’t promise that you will heal physical issues. We can’t promise that every relationship will heal, or that your financial woes will go away.
 
So what can we promise? What can I tell you for sure The Healing Codes or Healing Prayer will do for you if you do them faithfully? And why can I say with confidence that every area of your life can get better?
 
When you heal the underlying “heart issues”–those “implicit memories” buried in the subconscious that can pop up and sort of superimpose themselves in the present situation–you remove a certain kind of stress that you may not even be aware was influencing you.
 
When you remove that stress, your health improves because your immune system is not having to deal with the unconscious stress signals that cause your cells to close and potentially move into disease mode.
 
Did you ever notice that when you’re stressed, you tend to be your worst self? So do other people. When two people are operating out of “worst self” stress mode . . . well, I don’t have to tell you it’s not a pretty picture for the relationship.
 
And have you ever noticed that when you’re stressed, you’re not your most productive self, either?
 
So what “healing heart issues” does is help you move from your “worst self” to your “best self” by removing the things that caused your stress.
 
Everything improves because YOU improve.
 
That’s why, the more you heal your heart issues, the more every area of your life will  get better.
 
Health improves. Relationships improve because you’re your best self. (And, because if you release the effects of your Healing Codes to others, it’s amazing how they heal, too, and become more like their best selves.)
 
Your career and work satisfaction also tends to take off  because you’re at your best.
 
So that’s what I can promise, if you do Healing Codes or Healing Prayer faithfully. You will be moving ever closer toward your best self, and that will make everything in your life better.

Why Can’t I Find Memories to Heal?

With The Healing Codes, we look for memories that carry the same kind of feeling as the main issue that bothers us. The idea is that what bothers you now is likely attached to something called “implicit” memory (memories hidden in the subconscious mind), and if we find and heal that original memory, the current issue will resolve.

But what if, like many people, you can’t find any memories with that feeling?

Maybe you’ve had that feeling most of your life. Maybe you have very few childhood memories, period.

All the more reason to use something like The Healing Codes, because the original memories are likely so painful, that your Heart wants to protect you from the pain of remembering.

(This why, by the way, a lot of times “talk therapy” alone isn’t very effective. I had a therapist tell me, point blank, “therapy doesn’t heal anything.” We need a way to get at these implicit memories that carry the original lie.)

If you can’t remember much from your childhood, it may well be for yet a different reason. It could be because you grew up with Childhood Emotional Neglect.

Running on Empty

What happens when you grow up in a family in which emotions were not acknowledged, validated, and dealt with?

In her excellent book, Running on Empty: Overcome Your Childhood Emotional NeglectDr. Jonice Webb says that it’s not necessarily what happened to you that can cause problems. What failed to happen for you as a child “has as much or more power over who you have become as an adult than any of the events that you do remember.”

Some call it Type A trauma–the Absence of nurturing. And it can be just as damaging as Type B trauma, where the bad stuff like abuse happened.

Memories are formed when you feel strong emotions around an event. If your feelings were ignored, if no one ever helped you process your emotions, it can have an insidious effect on your life as an adult.

That’s because our brains record events as memories. Things that fail to happen go unnoticed, unseen, and unremembered.

You might struggle with self-discipline and self-care, of feel unworthy, disconnected, unfulfilled. Empty.

If you have the trait that 20% of the population has, High Sensitivity, where your nervous system is wired to process things deeply (including emotions), susceptible to over-stimulation (sensory or emotional), emotionally reactive, and sensitive to subtle stimuli–Childhood Emotional Neglect does even more harm.

When you’re Highly Sensitive, emotions are your native language. That’s a big part of the trait–emotional reactivity. If your language is not spoken or understood in your family, to them you were constantly speaking gibberish. You may have  been shamed or ridiculed. You may have tried to shut down, to turn off those feelings.

Thus you may have few memories, a feeling of emptiness and more likely than not, problems with your health, relationships, and/or career.

Emotion is energy, and that energy has to go somewhere. If it’s appropriately processed, it goes to a memory that becomes part of your life.

If it’s not properly processed, it becomes hidden trauma, and it goes into the body and mind and causes illness and disease. More and more scientific evidence points to emotional issues as the source of many if not most physical problems.

Then of course, there are the mental, emotional, and relational problems that show up because of hidden, unhealed memories.

In How We Love, Milan and Kay Yerkovich identify five “injured Love Styles” that can show up in families where there has been emotional neglect or other circumstances that interfere with a strong, secure emotional bond with caregivers early in life.

What’s the solution? How to you begin to heal what Jonice Webb calls “the invisible force that may be at work in your life”?

Reconnect with Your Emotions

First, you may need to relearn the language of feelings. Just allow yourself to name the feelings, to yourself and others. For some, this may not be easy. You may feel shame for having certain feelings, or having feelings at all.

Or you may have trouble even identifying your feelings. Running on Empty includes several pages of feelings words, and so does How We Love by Milan and Kay Yerkovich.

Ask yourself when you felt that way earlier in your life. If a memory comes up, heal it with The Healing Codes and/or healing prayer.

If no memory comes up, don’t sweat it. Just say in your Healing Code Prayer of Intention, “… from the childhood emotional neglect.” Assume that’s the source.

If you have any fear around the idea of welcoming emotions into your life, start with healing that fear. We always start where we are. Ask, “What’s bothering me? What exactly am I feeling? When did I feel like that before”? If the answer to that last question is, “All my life!” then that’s what you put into the prayer: “from a lifetime of emotional neglect.”

These questions will help you move forward in your healing journey.

How Feeling Bad Can Set You Free

Do you struggle in your relationships, especially close relationships?

The key to why lies in your childhood, in how you learned to love in your family. You learned patterns of relating that became “imprinted” upon you, including how to deal (or not deal) with feelings and needs.

An excellent book that explains all this is How We Love by Milan and Kay Yerkovich. My husband and I took a marriage class based on the book.

The authors have a free Love Styles quiz that tells you how you learned to love in your family. The patterns that you experienced will, without any kind of intervention, determine that “core pattern” of how you will relate in close relationships.

I recommend you take the Love Styles quiz, and find out what yours is. If you are part of the 75% of the population who did not learn a secure attachment style, you will be either an Avoider, a Pleaser, a Vacillator, a Victim, or a Controller–or any combination thereof! Read More→
