The Power of Being Witnessed

I was very moved this morning when I read a passage in the Gospel of Luke. To me, it was a powerful demonstration of the importance of being witnessed in the healing journey.

The context: Jesus was on his way to heal the only daughter of Jairus, the local synagogue leader. The girl was near death, and I’m sure the father was desperate for Jesus to get there as soon as possible.

The crowd jostled Jesus as he moved along. Among them was a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years. She’d spent all her money on doctors, none of whom had helped her. She was desperate for Jesus to heal her. She believed if only she could touch the hem of his garment, she would be healed.

She crept up next to him, and did exactly that. Instantly she felt in her body that she was healed.

Jesus felt it too. He felt healing energy flow from him. He asked, “Who touched me?”

Peter reminded him that all kinds of people were pressing in on him. Jesus insisted, “Someone did touch me, for I was aware that power had left me.” (Those skeptical of energy healing, take note!)

The woman, realizing she couldn’t hide any longer, came forth trembling and fell down before Him. She admitted in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.

“In the presence of all the people.” Jesus knew this woman needed more than physical healing. She needed to be witnessed. She needed to tell her story, fearful as she was to do so. She especially needed to hear Jesus say, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” (Luke 8: 40-48)

Jesus knew her deepest needs: to be seen and witnessed; to be welcomed as a “daughter”; to be affirmed for her courage and faith. He would not let the opportunity go by for this woman to be fully healed.

Full healing. Many psychologists, trauma experts and healers believe that only happens in the presence of other people. Here perhaps is scriptural proof.

(As an aside, while Jesus was taking time with this woman, the news came to Jairus that his daughter had already died. The messenger said not to bother Jesus anymore; it was too late.

But Jesus said it was not too late. He went on to Jairus’s house, and healed his daughter. Brought her back from the dead!)

One of the strengths of The Healing Codes is that it can be used anywhere, by anyone. And people are healed from it, sometimes emotionally, sometimes physically, sometimes both.

However, I wonder if that healing is like the woman’s physical healing as she touched Jesus’ garment–only partial. Is there perhaps a greater healing that can take place only when there is a connection with the Healer, only when our story is witnessed and we hear a word from Jesus?

I believe so, which is why I developed the Align with Your Divine Design[TM] program. The foundation of that program is learning to connect with Immanuel, the God who is ever with us, and to hear his voice on a daily basis. To experience the living, real, active presence of the living God.

One key way to do this is in a group setting. Because it’s in a group that we enter a space designed to facilitate connecting with God and each other, to be witnessed and to witness.

Jesus said, “Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

It’s in this kind of group that we can be guided to actually experience the real, living, interactive presence of “the God who is with us,” Immanuel, the name given to Jesus in scripture.

If you long for the deepest healing you can receive, and a deeper relationship with “God with us,” I invite you to sign up below and download the free Introduction to The Immanuel Connection for details to how it works.

You will also be sent a special invitation to the next Immanuel Connections call, which are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. U.S. Central time (click here for your time zone).
