“What Does It Mean When I Yawn During The Healing Code?”


A reader named Brenda asked me about something that happened to her while doing the Healing Codes, and I thought it would be good for everyone to realize what’s going on when you experience a physical reaction while you’re doing the Codes.

Brenda asks,

This is weird.  I’ve been doing the Healing Code  three times a day for three weeks. . . . Today I was doing it – I’m concentrating on trauma in my childhood – when I started to yawn. I wasn’t in the least bit tired, but every time I changed to a new position I started yawning. I could feel it welling up but try as I might I couldn’t stop it. Yawn, yawn, yawn . . .   So I decided to stop. 

Then I thought maybe there’s a reason for all this yawning, maybe my subconscious is blocking something disturbing, so,  though I felt uneasy, I went on.  After a while I started to slow down the Code, until I was spending much more time on every word, and the yawning slowed down and finally stopped.

Have you any idea why this happened?


Yes, Brenda! The yawning is a sign your body is releasing some trauma!  It’s a good thing! 

I learned this from several trauma experts. It is a sign that the nervous system is discharging stored energy, stored trauma. When your yawning stopped, you had released all you were ready to for that session.

Other signs of nervous system release, from Elizabeth Stanley, Ph.D.’s book Widen the Window: Training Your Brain and Body to Thrive During Stress and Recover from Trauma, might be:

  • tinwoman in black button up shirt yawninggling/buzzing
  • twitching
  • slower, deeper breathing
  • slower heart rate
  • relaxation of the chest or belly
  • shaking/trembling
  • chills
  • stomach gurgling
  • blushed skin/sweating
  • crying
  • laughing/giggling
  • sighing
  • coughing (phlegm)
  • itching
  • waves of warmth/heat
  • release of gas (burping, farting)

If you experience any of these things during your Healing Code, know that The Healing Code is working. You might want to keep doing the Code until the signs of release stop.

If you don’t experience any of these things, that’s OK too. I just don’t want anyone to fear that something terrible is happening. Quite the opposite!
